Gum Grafting

Soft-tissue treatment for gum recession, exposed roots and selected restorative or implant sites.

THE GUMS FRAME AND PROTECT THE TEETH

When tissue moves away from the root.

Gum recession occurs when the tissue surrounding a tooth migrates away from its original position, leaving more of the tooth or root exposed. This may contribute to sensitivity, root-surface vulnerability and changes in the appearance of the gumline.

Gum grafting refers to a group of soft-tissue procedures used to add coverage or thickness where additional tissue is needed.

WHY RECESSION HAPPENS

The cause matters to the treatment plan.

HABITS

Brushing + trauma

Aggressive brushing or repeated mechanical irritation can contribute to recession in susceptible areas.

BIOLOGY

Thin tissue

Naturally thin gum tissue and the position of individual teeth can make some areas more vulnerable to recession.

HEALTH + POSITION

Periodontal + tooth factors

Periodontal disease, tooth position, orthodontic movement and other local factors may also contribute in selected patients.

MORE THAN ONE GRAFTING TECHNIQUE

The procedure follows the objective.

A connective-tissue graft is one commonly used approach and typically uses tissue obtained from beneath the surface of the palate. Other soft-tissue techniques or substitute materials may be considered depending on anatomy and treatment goals.

Treatment may focus on root coverage, increasing tissue thickness, improving gumline contour or supporting restorative and implant treatment.

A COMMON APPROACH

Connective Tissue Grafting

Ashraf Dentistry offers connective-tissue grafting for selected areas of recession and thin gum architecture.

GUM TISSUE + IMPLANTS

Soft tissue also matters around implant restorations.

Implant dentistry is not only about the bone. The quantity, thickness and contour of surrounding gum tissue can influence hygiene access, tissue stability and the appearance of the final restoration.

Soft-tissue grafting may be considered when additional tissue support is needed around an implant or planned restoration.

RELATED CARE

Planning an implant?

Bone and soft tissue are assessed together when planning implant treatment.

AFTER GRAFTING

Protect the site while it matures.

EARLY

Gentle healing

Home-care instructions generally limit unnecessary disturbance around the graft during early healing.

FOLLOW-UP

Monitor healing

Follow-up appointments allow the surgical site and gumline to be reviewed as the tissue heals and matures.

ADJUNCT

PRP when selected

Platelet-rich plasma may be incorporated into selected surgical procedures as a biologic adjunct to the overall healing plan.
