PERIODONTAL PLASTIC SURGERY / YORKVILLE + WATERLOO

Connective Tissue
Grafts

Reinforcing or rebuilding the gumline when recession leaves roots exposed or surrounding tissue is too thin.

GUM RECESSION CHANGES MORE THAN APPEARANCE

Restore protection around the tooth.

When the gumline recedes, root surfaces can become exposed. This may contribute to sensitivity, aesthetic concerns and greater vulnerability of the exposed root surface.

Contributing factors can include periodontal disease, aggressive brushing, tooth position, orthodontic movement, clenching or grinding, and naturally thin gum tissue.

THE PROCEDURE

A connective tissue graft

A thin layer of tissue is commonly obtained from beneath the surface of the palate and positioned where additional gum thickness or root coverage is required. The specific technique depends on the recession pattern, surrounding tissue and treatment goal.

WHY ADD TISSUE?

Protection, thickness and contour.

PROTECT

Cover vulnerable roots

Root coverage may help protect exposed surfaces and can reduce sensitivity in appropriate cases.

REINFORCE

Increase tissue thickness

Additional tissue can reinforce areas with naturally thin gum architecture around selected teeth or restorations.

BALANCE

Improve gumline contour

Periodontal plastic surgery can also consider the way the gumline frames natural teeth and restorative work.

THE GRAFTING PLAN

Precision at the gum-to-tooth interface.

Treatment is individualized according to the relationship between the tooth, exposed root surface and surrounding tissue. Assessment focuses on the recession pattern, tissue thickness, tooth position and the intended restorative or periodontal outcome.

In selected situations, biologic materials or tissue substitutes may also be considered depending on the indication and surgical plan.

GRAFTING + RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

Soft tissue frames restorative work.

Connective tissue grafting may be planned around natural teeth as well as restorative and implant treatment when additional tissue thickness or contour is important.

Periodontal planning can therefore be relevant not only to recession, but also to selected crowns, veneers and implant restorations.

RELATED TREATMENT

Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is the broader category of soft-tissue augmentation. Connective tissue grafting is one commonly used technique within that category.

RECOVERY + PRP

Support healing after periodontal surgery.

Aftercare generally includes temporary changes to brushing, eating and activity around the surgical site while early tissue healing occurs. Follow-up appointments allow the graft and surrounding gumline to be monitored as healing progresses.

Platelet-Rich Plasma may also be incorporated into selected periodontal and surgical procedures as a biologic adjunct within the broader healing plan.

CONNECTIVE TISSUE GRAFTS / YORKVILLE + WATERLOO

Rebuild the tissue that protects the tooth.

Schedule a periodontal assessment if you have gum recession, exposed roots or thin tissue around natural teeth, restorations or implants.
