FACIAL PAIN

WHEN THE JAW DOESN’T GET A BREAK

Pain can extend far beyond the joint.

The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull and work together with the surrounding muscles every time you speak, chew or open your mouth.

Clenching, grinding, muscle overactivity and problems within the jaw system can contribute to discomfort that is felt not only around the jaw, but also across the face, temples, ears, head and neck.

THE SYMPTOM PATTERN

Does any of this feel familiar?

TMJ-related symptoms can look different from one person to another. The pattern matters just as much as any single symptom.

Jaw muscles that feel tight or sore

Clicking or popping with movement

Pain near the temples or ears

Frequent tension-type headaches

Morning facial fatigue or pressure

Signs of clenching or grinding

FIRST, UNDERSTAND THE SOURCE

Not every jaw problem is the same.

Jaw and facial pain can have multiple contributing factors. Before recommending treatment, the goal is to understand your symptoms, clenching or grinding habits, dental wear, muscle tenderness and how the jaw functions.

That assessment helps determine whether care should focus on protecting the teeth, reducing muscle activity, addressing the bite or considering another source of facial pain.

CUSTOM NIGHT GUARDS

Protecting the teeth is one part of the picture.

A custom night guard can help protect the teeth and restorations from the effects of clenching or grinding while providing a precisely fitted appliance based on your bite.

Ashraf Dentistry also uses digital imaging and in-house 3D printing for customized night guards, allowing the appliance to be designed around the patient’s individual teeth and bite.

BUT WHAT IF THE MUSCLES ARE STILL OVERWORKING?

A guard and muscle treatment address different parts of the problem.

A night guard helps separate and protect the teeth, but it may not fully reduce the activity of muscles that continue to clench or contract strongly.

THERAPEUTIC BOTULINUM TOXIN

When muscle overactivity is part of the problem.

For selected patients, therapeutic botulinum toxin may be considered as part of a treatment plan for muscle-related jaw tension, clenching or bruxism.

The medication temporarily reduces signaling to targeted muscles. When carefully placed into overactive chewing muscles, this can reduce the strength of excessive contractions for a period of time.

Whether this approach is appropriate depends on the cause of your symptoms and the findings from your examination.

THE GOAL

Reduce excessive muscular tension.

  • Jaw tightness related to overactivity
  • Clenching and grinding forces
  • Muscle-related facial discomfort
  • Associated tension patterns

ONE SYMPTOM DOES NOT DEFINE THE PLAN

Treatment is built around the pattern.

01

Protect

Reduce the effects of grinding or clenching on the teeth and restorations when an appliance is appropriate.

02

Reduce

Address excessive muscle contraction when muscle overactivity is identified as a meaningful contributor.

03

Reassess

Monitor how symptoms respond over time and adjust the treatment plan when needed.

DIGITAL DENTISTRY + TMJ CARE

Precision matters in something you wear every night.

Digital scanning and in-house fabrication allow selected dental appliances to be created from a detailed representation of your teeth rather than relying solely on conventional impressions.
